The mission of the Elephant Circle is to ensure a robust maternity care system exists – one that supports diversity, prepares confident parents, and delivers safe, cost effective, collaborative care for all families within a human rights framework.
We use a combination of community organizing, popular education and advocacy to meet our goals. Our advocacy take places in legal, regulatory and legislative realms. Elephant Circle has had two successful legislative campaigns: we helped pass a law in 2010 that prohibits the shackling of incarcerated women during labor, and helped improve the law in 2011 that regulates home birth midwives.
Women of color are at the center of our efforts to transform maternity care in Colorado because we have been consistently and historically disregarded as experts in our own well being and no effort at transformation will be complete until our expertise is celebrated and our dignity valued.
